Common Causes of Burr Formation
- Improper Angle: If your sharpening angle is inconsistent or incorrect, it can lead to pronounced burr formation. I aim for a 15 to 20-degree angle for my kitchen knives but have experimented with slightly steeper or shallower angles depending on the blade's intended use.
- Uneven Pressure: Applying too much pressure on one side of the blade can exacerbate burr formation. I’ve learned to maintain consistent, even pressure throughout the sharpening process.

Diagnosing Burr Problems

- Direction: Stropping is done away from the edge to avoid creating new burrs.
Troubleshooting Stropping Issues

- Insufficient Compound: If I’m not getting desired results, I check if I’ve applied enough compound to the strop. A light, even coating is best.
